Guatemala Medical Mission

In the beginning of November, Trevor was able to join other Dr. and residents from the hospital to serve a one week medical mission in Guatemala to work on children's feet.  Since his desire is to specialize in children's feet, this was a great opportunity for him to go.  It was tight, coming up with the money, but we are being blessed and it was made possible for him to go.

Unfortunately, right before he left, he caught my bronchitis/head cold!  He got on some anitbiotics just in time, but his ears didn't recover from the plane trip and altitude changes until after he got back home, a week later.

The staff had to bring all the medical/surgical supplies with them.  They were really organized and had each member pack some in suitcases.  This way, if one suitcase was "lost" through customs (as it has in previous years), they would still have other supplies in another suitcase.

Here's Trevor, packing his supplies.
 At the airport in Guatemala
Very cramped bus ride (with hurting ears from the pressure/head cold)
Transfer to another bus. (Trevor in yellow shirt, red hat)
And transfer to another bus.  (enlarge the pic, you can see Trevor trying to pop his ears)
Poor guy!
The extra luggage transport truck.
Clinic lunch on Sunday.
Fancy hotel they were able to tour
Sitting in the lobby at fancy hotel
Lunch at hotel
Child's foot with double pinky toe before surgery.
Co-residents scrubbing, getting ready for surgery.

They did surgeries all day long, every day.  They were very busy.
Dr. Olenech (Resident Director), Dr. Athens (head of the Guatemala project), Trevor and Sheila (co-resident)
Trevor, inspecting a child's foot.
Sweet baby, post-op, wanting that sucker!  So darling.
Little girl just got her club feet worked on.  Brother is looking on.

Last night celebration dinner.
Trevor and his neighbor were the only ones drinking water (bottled of course, tap isn't safe there).
I'm so glad he was able to have this experience and to serve the children.
I know it will change their lives and ability to thrive when they become adults.

  2. It was so fun to go through and read all your posts! I haven't checked in a little while and I missed a lot. That experience looks really great for Trevor, love the idea of painting the figurines (Might have to copy you), good job Black Friday shopping. I dragged Jack with me this year and it was so fun too--we even went out to breakfast right afterwards--ya know, at 5:30am! Fun times--love to see what you are up to!
